BRADY, Delphia Mary {I04206} (b. 07 NOV 1897, d. 10 JUL 1997)Note: A group of former students from Van Buren Township, Independent School District #1 gathered on Tues., Dec. 2, at the site of the former Pleasant Grove Rural School in section 10, along county Highway V45 about five miles north of Sigourney where they viewed the newly placed site marker. The marker is patterned after those used in Fremont County, where a successful school site marker program has been completed.
The one room Pleasant Grove School closed in 1946 and was auctioned and moved in 1955. Delphia Brady Devine was the teacher when the school closed.
The Keokuk County Historical Society in Sigour-ney, reports that current interest indicates that additional school site markers will be placed in Keokuk County next year. Anyone interested may contact the Keokuk County Historical Society. The Historical Society is open on Wednesday and Thursday each week.

Edna Martha McKenna was born on March 28, 1913 near Keswick, IA, a daughter of Hugh and Anna Bender Brady. She graduated from Keswick High School in 1931 and received her Normal Training Certificate from Ottumwa Heights College. She went on to receive her BA Degree from William Penn College in Oskaloosa in the 1960's. Edna started teaching at Elm Grove country school, then taught in Parnell and North English. She later taught a number of years in Rock Island, IL, where she lived until her retirement. Edna then moved to North English. She was united in marriage to Thomas McKenna in 1937, in Keswick, IA. They lived on the family farm north of Kinross. He preceded her in death on August 17, 1961. Edna had a keen sense of humor, was an avid card player, and loved gardening, fishing and her dog. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. She is survived by sons: Pat McKenna (Mary Ann) of North English, IA; John McKenna (Eleanor) of Towson, MD; Hugh McKenna of Coralville, IA; Ellen Hines (Rick) of Naperville, IL; Dan McKenna of North English, IA; twins: Neal McKenna (Kim) of Chana, IL and Ned McKenna (Kathryn) of Colona, IL; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Mary Lou Brady of Colorado Springs, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter Delphia McKenna, a grand daughter Karla Weber; brothers: George and Thomas Brady; sisters Delphia Devine, Sister Mary Hugh Brady, Ellen Doyle, Mary Baird, Rita Thomas and Frances Hayes and a daughter-in-law Mary McKenna. Sister Mary Hugh Brady, 94, of the Congregation of Humility
of Mary Center, died Friday (Aug. 25, 1995) at Genesis Medical
Center, East Campus, Davenport.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Humility
of Mary Center Chapel, Davenport, with burial in Mount Calvary
Cemetery, Davenport.
Visitation is at 4 p.m. today at the center, with a vigil service
at 7 tonight. Memorials may be made to the Congregation of Humility
of Mary Retirement Fund. Halligan-McCabe Funeral Home, Davenport,
is in charge of arrangements.
Sister Mary Hugh Brady was born March 28, 1901, in Keswick,
a daughter of Hugh and Mary Bender Brady.
She entered the Congregation of Humility of Mary on July
20, 1920, and professed her vows on Sept. 1, 1922.
She received her master of arts degree in history in 1949 from
Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.
She was employed as a teacher, teaching primary and lower grades
to begin with. She became a high school teacher in the 1950s.
Her first mission was at St. Anthony's School in Des Moines.
She taught in Des Moines, Dunlap and Cosgrove, Iowa, from 1922-26.
She also taught at St. Mary's School in Marshalltown from 1926-27;
St. Vincent School in Davenport from 1948-51; St. Mary's School
in Ottumwa from 1951-53; and Dowling High School in Des Moines
from 1954-59. Then from 1959-64 she taught at Catholic schools
in Le Mars, Iowa, where she served as a superior. From 1965-66
she served at Catholic Central High School, Great Falls, Mont.,
and from 1971-89 she worked in Clear Lake, Iowa, in child care.
She retired in 1989.
Survivors include three sisters, Edna McKenna, North English,
Rita Thomas, Keswick, and Delphia Devine, Sigourney; and several
nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

SIGOURNEY-Rita Thomas, age 94, of Sigourney, died Thursday, August 4, 2005, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney, following a brief illness. Rita was born November 8, 1910, in Keswick, to Hugh and Mary (Bender) Brady. She graduated from Keswick High School and received Normal Training. On October 27, 1941 she married Dean ?Boge? Thomas in Keswick. Rita taught rural school and served as the Postmistress in Keswick for over 30 years, retiring in 1971. She lived in Keswick most of her life and wintered in South Padre Island, Texas for 25 years. Rita was a member of the Keswick Women?s Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Keswick and St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney and enjoyed fishing, shelling and playing bridge. Survivors include two daughters: Sarah Horras of Richland and Suzi Mohr and husband Carl of Sigourney; four grandchildren: Mary Ann Mohr, Maureen Mohr, Heather Horras and Shawn Horras; one sister: Edna McKenna of North English; two sisters-in-law: Mary Lou Brady of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Helen Thomas Ramsey of Bella Vista, Arkansas; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Dean in 1984; grandson: Shawn Howard Horras; two brothers: Tom Brady and George Brady and five sisters: Delphia Devine, Frances Hayes, Sister Mary Hugh Brady, Ellen Doyle and Mary Baird. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 8, 2005, at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2005, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where the rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Keswick, St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Port Isabel, Texas or the Sigourney Public Library Building Fund. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
