TIGGELEN, Barend Van {I00050} (b. 19 JUL 1919, d. 10 FEB 1995)Note: Ben grew up in Schoonhoven, South Holland, the only surviving child of Anna & Martinus (general manager of a Dutch paint and chemical company with whom he worked for 49 years). Ben trained as a pastry chef.
Ben was reportedly active in the Dutch resistance during WW II. He was also believed to have spent a portion of the war in England and in particular the Isle of Wight. Married to Johanna Ende in late 1946 Ben was immediately posted by the Dutch Army to Indonesia as part of the Dutch force to put down the Indonesian independence movement and return the Dutch East Indies to Dutch control. Following the Dutch accession to Indonesian independence in December 1949, Ben sent to Holland for his young bride to come to Indonesia. Demobolised from the Army around late 1949 or early 1950, he stayed on in Indonesia where he purchased and operated a bakery in Sukabumi, Java, Indonesia. The decsion to remain in Indonesia was probably based on the fact that living conditions in post war Holland were extremely poor with very limited opportunities for a young family. Pregnant with their first child and concerned about stability and their future safety in Indonesia (the Indonesians were not happy with the continuing Dutch presence), they sought and received immigrant or refugee status from the Australian government who had only just sigend the Netherlands Australia Migration Agreement. This agreement subsidized Dutch people from both Holland and Indonesia to migrate to Australia. The majority of their travel costs were paid in return for a guarantee to work in a government assigned industry for two years. Flown to Darwin then Sydney on a Qantas commercial flight and bringing only what they could carry, they were immediately moved by train to a migrant camp in Bathurst NSW where Anna (Anneke), their first daughter was born six weeks later.
From the migrant camp, the young van Tiggelen family moved to Georgetown, Tasmania to take up employment with the Alcoa Company (Aluminium mining & smelting company). In the meantime Ben's father and mother moved from Holland to be with their son c1953. Martinus also worked for Alcoa for some time. After several years at Alcoa, Ben opened his own bakery in the Goergetown area around 1957. About the same time Johanna opened a hairdressing salon. Between 1957 and 1963 Jo sold her hairdressing salon to join Ben in the bakery. In 1963, Ben, Jo and their two daughters converted to the Seventh Day Adventist religion. In 1964, Ben leased his business and with their two daughters travelled to Holland for about 18 months for a family reunion. The time was spent in Holland living with Ben's and Jo's families. Anneke (who was 12 at the time), and Tine (11) attended finishing (domestic school) school in Schoonhoven. Anneke and Tine developed a good spoken and written comprehension of the Dutch language which they were to retain through their later years. In 1965 , with Jo pregnant with their son Martinus, the family returned to Tasmania. Unfortunately the man who leased the bakery had run it into the ground. Ben then took up a number of jobs including truck driver but was restricted in the jobs available to him beacuse his religous beliefs precluded him from working on Saturdays.
Ben's father and mother returned to Holland in c1955 as his mother yearned for the Dutch life style. Martinus returned working for Royal Dutch Shell againl until his return to Australia after the death of his wife in 1971.
In 1970, Anneke left the family home in Tasmania to take up employment as a nurse's aide in the Sydney Adventist Hospital. In 1971 the rest of the van Tiggelen family moved to Warburton, Victoria. The purpose for the move was to take up employment with the Warburton Sanitarium and Hospital, operated by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Ben as the head chef in the hospital kitchen and Jo as an assistant in the hospital laundry. Ben's mother died at this time and Ben's father, Martinus moved to Warburton from Schoonhoven, Holland to live with his son. In May 1973, Anneke married Michael Jacobs in Pymble, NSW and in July 1973 Martinus, father of Ben passed away in Warburton. Over the next few years Ben personally built a delightful family home from second hand building materials he had acquired in the Warburton area (Anderson's Ave, Warburton, Vic.)
In 1974, Tine married Mark Lloyd, a medical student who also lived in Warburton and Anneke and Michael moved from their North Ryde (Sydney, NSW) home to live in Warburton near Ben & Jo.
Ben and Jo retired from the Warburton Sanitarium and Hospital in 1984 and moved to Horsham, Victoria where they bought a home near where their second daughter Tine and her husband, now a partner in a thriving medical practice lived. They lived out their remaining years simply and comfortably in this home until Jo died in 1990 and Ben died (at home while having breakfast with his grandson Ramon) in 1995.
