SOBELS, Carl August {I02739} (b. 1802, d. 1863)
Note: One of the earliest winemakers, whose descendants still produce wine, was Carl August Sobels. Born in Dresden in 1802, he arrived in South Australia on the Hermann von Beckerath in 1847. At first he farmed at Macclesfield before moving to Tanunda where he produced tablewines. After his death in 1863 the business was conducted by his son Ferdinand
------------------------------------------------------------------
The person whose name appears on all company documents, Kevin Sobels is a 5th generation Australian wine maker. His ancestors arrived in the Barossa Valley in 1847 from Germany already trained in the art of wine making.
Carl August Sobels is named in the annuals of Barossa History as being the pioneer wine maker assisting teaching those who had already planted some vine in the art of growing and wine making. He built his own winery in 1850 and a descendant of his family has been actively making wine in this country since.
Kevin, before moving his family from South Australia to the Hunter Valley learnt his trade from time spent as a youngster with his father and then working for such companies as Hardy's and Saltram before taking up the position as wine maker and manager of Seppelts operations base at Chateau Tanunda and Seppeltsfield.
In 1972 he moved with his family to Muswellbrook and built a winery their where he made wines for his own label as well as contracting for others. In the mid 1980's relocated their operations from the Upper Hunter to Pokolbin in the lower Hunter where they have continued in the business.

Margaret Sobels
Fully employed looking after husband, children and all things pertaining to the business. Trained as a nurse Margaret was also bought up in a wine family whose history in the industry can be traced back to the 1870's. Her father Jack Neilson managed Hardy's Winery for many years until his retirement in late 1970.

Jason Sobels
Eldest of two sons and the only one at this stage who has chosen wine as his career path making him a 6th generation probably the only one in Australia who would be able to claim the honour. Jason looks after all things related to the vineyard as well as assisting his father in the winery learning the making side of the business. When he is not doing this he can be found in the sales outlet.

Shareholders
A necessary group who, when the Sobels they were offered the current location put some capital in to assist them buy the land and build the current winery. Most have stayed on almost becoming part of the family, offering support, becoming quite good at picking grapes and offering sound advice.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sobels did not fit the mould cast by Mücke; that of rural vinegrower and winemaker from the Oder-Elbe watershed, an area of declining viticultural importance sustained only by the Russian demand for sweet sparkling wines (Anon, 1880; Muirhead, 1886, 1887; Decanter Jan. 1984, p.5). Born in Dresden in 1802, he entered the wine industry at the age of 15 and worked as vigneron, winemaker and distiller at various locations along the Rhine Valley and in France. His last position before emigrating was at the Château de Mareuil near Ay in the department of Marne, where he was involved in the manufacture of champagne under the direction of the Duke of Montebello (South Australian Parliamentary Paper 88/1858 pp.324, 348).

Arriving in South Australia in 1848, Sobels took up farming at Macclesfield (Australian Archives (Canberra), Certificates of Naturalisation, A729, vol.4, No.56, and folio 8 No.16), but Joseph Gilbert soon attracted him to Pewsey Vale, where he was employed until 1851. His departure from Pewsey Vale appears to have been precipitated by the new Distillation Act, which entered the statutes on the 1st January 1852. Sobels settled in Tanunda in 1853 (South Australian Parliamentary Paper 88/1858 p.320) and, buying grapes from local vinegrowers for processing in his own cellar, rapidly established a name for himself as a winemaker. His success was such that, by 1859 his wines had replaced imported growths at the Tanunda Hotel (Register 3/2/1859), and by 1862 he had opened up the trade with Melbourne (Ward, 1862, p.28).

Sobels was also winemaker or consultant to several English born winegrowers in the Barossa Valley and elsewhere, including Patrick Auld (Auldana), Henry Evans (Evandale), and Abraham Shannon (Moculta) (Observer 7/9/1861; Register 13/10/1863). Their early successes were due in no small measure to Sobels: their continued success was a fitting tribute to the man and his influence. Yet there was a symbiotic relationship between Sobels and his wines. "This is the finest country for the cultivation of the vine with which I am acquainted", he said at the peak of his career in 1858, adding, "South Australia was intended by Nature to produce wine of the finest quality, and to hold a high place in the markets of the world" (South Australian Parliamentary Paper 88/1858 p.360).

SOBELS, Talbot Waldemar {I00170} (b. 22 JUN 1887, d. 29 JUN 1954)
Note: Sobels winery in South Australia was combined with the larger Leo Buhring and both were eventually taken over by a French company (famous Cognac maker).

Talbot apparently fell out of grace with the family, probably after Emil took over as manager of the winery in 1923. They lived a very good life at the Watervale winery until this time. Talbot was then unemployed and Nora had to become the breadwinner which apparently she did very courageously.
