Additional Information: GEORGE LESLIE (served as BARNETT, Son of George Ernest and Elizabeth Rehn.

Commemorative Information
Memorial: LABUAN MEMORIAL, Malaysia
Grave Reference/
Panel Number: Panel 24.

Location: Labuan is a small island of Labuan in Brunei Bay, off the coast of north-west Borneo. The Cemetery lies on the right side of the Jalan Tanjong Batu road, which leads from the airport to the town. It is approximately 0.5 kilometres from the airport and about 3 kilometres from the island's town of Victoria. The Labuan Memorial was primarily intended to commemorate the officers and men of the Australian Army and Air Force who died while prisoners of war in Borneo and the Philippines from 1942 to 1945, and during the 1945 operations for the recovery of Borneo, and who have no known grave. Subsequently, it was found that a number of men belonging to the local forces of North Borneo, Sarawak and Brunei who were killed on war service also have no known grave, and they, too, are honoured here. Men of the Royal Australian Navy who lost their lives in the south-western Pacific region, and have no grave but the sea, are commemorated on Plymouth Naval Memorial in England, along with many of their comrades of the Royal Navy and of other Commonwealth Naval Forces. The Memorial consists of a colonnade forming a forecourt immediately inside the wrought iron gates of the main entrance to the cemetery. On the inner faces of the pillars are bronze panels on which are engraved the names of those whom it honours and the dedicatory inscription given below is on the frieze facing the entrance: HEREON ARE RECORDED THE NAMES OF OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH OF NATIONS WHO DIED WITHIN AND AROUND BORNEO DURING THE 1939-1945 WAR AND WHOSE GRAVES ARE KNOWN ONLY UNTO GOD.

REHN, Johann {I00422} (b. ABT 1815, d. 26 FEB 1853)
Note: Arrived on South Australian 23 April 1837 in Kingscote, SA from Plymouth, England
(Ship "South Australian" Plymouth to Kingscote
Departed 22 Dec 1836
Arrived 22 Apr 1837
Ship type barque operated 1819-1837
63 passengers)

Resided at Houghton, Kingscote, Gilles Plains SA.

No record of death in South Australia between 1848 and 1858.

Following is an extract from a book on the Rehn family history called "The Rehn Heritage Book" and transcribed by Helen Wakefield, a Rehn descendant.

JOHANN REHN MARRIED ANNA CATAREAN ELIZABETH SCHROETER

In late 1836 Johann Rehn, with his wife and young son arrived in London from their native country in Germany. Johann was to be one of the party of six Germans engaged by George Fife Angas acting for the newly formed South Australian Company, to assist with agriculture in the new settlement of South Australia.

Johann was to assist in the growing of flax. The other five mens surnames were - Stein, Schultz, (vine dressers) Kleinschmidt (Friedrich Wilhelm KLEINSCHMIDT) , Hiffman (H.J. Hoffman) and Ahrens (Heinrich Gerhard AHRENS), who were to be labourers. The party was placed in the charge of a Dr. Drescher. None of these six men was able to speak any English when they left Germany.

They left England in the sailing ship "THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN" on the 20th December 1836 and arrived at Kingscote, Kangaroo Island on the 22nd April 1837.

"THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN" was only 80 feet long and was designed for mercantile and whaling purposes. After discharging it's passengers and cargo and Kangaroo Island, it proceeded to Encounter Bay to bring a cargo of whale oil back to the new settlement at Kingscote. The ship was returning to the whaling station for a further shipment when almost at it's destination it was obliged to shelter from a severe storm. The anchors failed to hold and "THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN" was driven ashore onto rocks and wrecked near Encounter Bay. The crew was saved!

Johann Rehn was contracted to work for the South Australian Company for three years. He was to be paid 14 shillings per week for the first year, 15 shillings per week for the second year and 16 shillings per week for the third year. He was given an advance of Thirty Four Pounds, which was to be repaid at the end of the contract.

Although life on the journey out on "THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN" would not have been very pleasant conditions were little better at Kingscote according to a Mrs. Jane Debney writing in a book "RECOLLECTIONS OF PIONEER LIFE".

In describing her voyage out on "THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN" and the eighteen months at Kingscote she writes 'the emigrants lived for the most part in tents and suffered considerable privations. There was only one store and at times some articles of household use went up to famine prices.

The first cask of butter was sold at four shilling per pound. Eggs were sixpence each and soap was two shillings per pound. Add to this the conditions, the language difficulties, life was very hard.'

When Johann and Anna came to the mainland from Kangaroo Island, they came to the Payneham area. Many of the early German migrants settled in the Klemzig area with the assistance of representatives of the South Australian Company, so they may have moved to Klemzig and then to neighbouring Payenham where they purchased lots 14 and 15. (2 acres). They later sold this land to a Thomas Jackson.

When Johann died in 1853 he was living opposite the Houghton Cemetery which was then behind the Union Chapel.

The house was later for many years the home of John and Robina Gallop who has lately restored it and named it "Robinas Cottage." Robina was the sister of Helen Rehn (nee Dunn) the wife of Joseph Rehn. Joseph being the third son of Johann and Anna.

Probably Johann was buried in 1853 in the first Houghton Cemetery in the grounds of the Union Chapel. The present Houghton Cemetery was opened in 1860 on land donated by Mr. John Gallop Snr. the father of Robina Gallops husband who held the office of Clerk of Highercomb Districk Council from 1874 to 1924. We are unable to ascertain just where Johanns grave is because tombstones in 1853 in Houghton Cemetery were of wood and have been long since been destroyed by fire. There are no records of this first Houghton Cemetery in existence.

When Johann died it was perhaps expected, because he made his will only about a fortnight before his death. We have a photostat copy of his will in which he left all his possessions to his dear wife Catarean Elizabeth Rehn. His wifes correct name was "Anna Catherine Elizabeth Rehn." This led to a supreme court hearing in Adelaide in which Anna had to swear she was lawful wife of Johann Rehn and that the correct name in the will was a mistake. The judge the Honourable Charles Cooper, agreed and granted probate on the 18th June 1853.

In early 1854 Anna married Chritstian Frederick Thiele, who we believe came from the Lobethal district. From the records of land purchases it would seem that Anna was the more resoureful of the couple, and in documents her signature appears.
