BABINGTON, Edward {I02239} (b. 1774, d. 1828)
Note: From Licolnshire Archives web site
http://www.demon.co.uk/lincs-archives/con_b.txt

Convict's surname : BABBINGTON
Convict's first name : EDWARD
Place of origin :
Year of conviction : 1823
Lincs. Archives reference: HILL 41/5/6

Edward Babington or Babbington, a labourer, was tried at the Lincolnshire Assize court on 8 March 1823, aged 49. He was convicted of slaughtering a wether sheep at Revesby, the property pf J Holden, and taking away the carcas, leaving the skin, head and entrails. He was sentenced to life and transported to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) on the ship 'Phoenix' in 1824.

BABINGTONS OF LINCOLNSHIRE
This is my great-great-grandmothers line, she was Mary Jane BABINGTON from Coningsby, Lincolnshire (some seven miles southwest of where we live here in Horncastle.) This is the lineage that I had no information on at all, when I started on this line in 1999. We found out that her parents were from right here in Horncastle, and had actually married in the same church as Paul and I had in 1998 (how curious is this). This is mentioned in the publication HORNCASTLE THEN AND NOW, also mentioning the stained glass window dedicated to cousins of this family, which I will explain in a moment. We found that my gggg grandfather James was a printer in the High Street of Horncastle, and he and his partner BOULTON published the registers of the Coningsby parish at the time of the birth of Mary Jane.

One of the brothers of James was Edward, who we would now call the 'black sheep of the family'; he was sent to Van Diemens Land Australia (herein referred to as VDL) and his family followed at a later date. The records of his demeanours will be shown on a page I am currently working on and his descendants will be shown in the page of BABINGTONS OF AUSTRALIA (also being worked on at the moment). Edwards son, also called Edward (they love confusing us don't they!), did not go to VDL, he stayed in Horncastle, on East Street. He was a bank manager. After he and his wife passed away his daughter Lucy had a stained glass window dedicated to them and a number of their children at the CHURCH OF EASE, TRINITY CHURCH here in Horncastle, actually nearly opposite the house where they lived. However the Church is now a Tourist Information Centre, and is open from early May to September. The Stained Glass Window is to the left hand side as you go in, (i.e. it is the West window) you can't fail to miss it! It was so nice to show 'cousins'; Lois and John Kennett from Australia round there in April 2000 and their eyes lit up as they saw it. We also showed them Benniworth, Old Bolingbroke, Mareham-le-Fen and Revesby which have connections to the Babingtons of Lincolnshire.

Below is the basic lineage I have traced so far and we are back as far as Christopher (born 1659), however different lineages show him having different fathers all aged approx 100 years old (!!), these being Cornelius or Ferdinand from Middlesex.
