OTIS, Charlotte Downes {I04069} (b. 15 OCT 1800, d. ?)
Note: Le Roy's First Lady - Charlotte Downes Otis

SEPT. 29, 2003 - by Lynne Belluscio - As much as we know about Jacob LeRoy, we know less about his wife, Charlotte. Genealogical information tells us that she was born in Boston, Massachusetts at 8 o'clock in the morning of October 15, 1800. Her parents were Thomas and Charlotte Otis, who were married on May 12, 1799. Charlotte was their first child. A brother, Thomas, died when very young. Charlotte's sister, Helen was born in 1802. Edward was born in 1803 but died when he was three. Caroline, another sister was born in 1807, but she too died young. Charlotte's father was related to the famous Otis family of Boston and was apparently a successful businessman.

So far, I have not been able to discover much about Charlotte's early life. Was she sent to school? Where did she meet her future husband? Was she with her mother in Paris in 1821, when she died? (Her mother is buried in Pere la chaise Cemetery in Paris.) Thomas Otis left Boston and moved to New York City and is listed on the census of 1820. On May 20, 1822, twenty-one year old Charlotte Otis married twenty-seven year old Jacob "Black Jake" LeRoy. Soon they moved to Le Roy, the town named for Jacob's father. Their house was not completed, so they lived in a boarding house, while the little brick land office was made into a mansion. Was LeRoy House finished when Charlotte gave birth to their first child, Thomas, on July 9, 1823, or was Thomas the first child born in the stately mansion? Only a couple of months earlier, Charlotte's only sister, Helen, married, Jacob Rutgers LeRoy, a cousin of "Black Jake." Charlotte gave birth to another boy, Augustus Newbold on August 23, 1824, and their first daughter, Charlotte Downes was born on February 5, 1826. A year later, another daughter, Caroline Louisa was born on February 20, 1827.

In August 1828, Jacob wrote to his father, "I hope this will find you safely anchored in New York . . Charlotte gave me a false alarm yesterday & in consequence sent post haste for Mrs. Stewart but today quite well & about the house, out two little girls with Charlotte Downes have been staying at the Springs for the few days past for the benefit of the waters." Charlotte's false alarm was because she was in the eighth month of her fifth pregnancy. Mrs. Stewart was probably a mid wife. Helen Otis was born on September 18, 1828. Charlotte LeRoy not only had a large family to manage, but it appears that she had servants in her household.

The 1830 census must have been taken before the birth of Catherine Augusta Newbold on May 4, 1830. There were 14 people living at LeRoy House. Two boys between 5 and 10 are Thomas and Agustus. Jacob is one of the two men between 30 and 40. The other man and a man between the ages of 20 and 30 are servants - perhaps a livery man and the gardener. Women listed in the census include 3 under five years: Charlotte, Caroline and Helen. Mrs. LeRoy would account for one of the women between 20 and 30, but there were two other women in the household of that age. Perhaps one was the governess, Ann Francis Arnold. There were also two girls between 15 and 20 and a black woman between 36 and 55.

There is no question that Charlotte LeRoy did not do her own cooking and wash. She was a lady of means and had servants. Rooms on the third floor and in the basement were probably servants quarters. Tragedy struck the LeRoy household in 1831 when four-year old Caroline Louisa died. She was buried in St. Mark's Cemetery. Another son, Edward Agustus was born on June 14, 1833, followed by Julia Edgar on November 28, 1834. Julia died before she was two, and joined her sister at St. Mark's burial ground. (The bodies of the little LeRoy girls were later moved to Machpelah Cemetery and buried on the Lathrop lot.)

Louisa was born on July 16, 1837 shortly before the family moved back to New York City. Charlotte was now thirty-seven and had given birth to nine children. After the family moved to New York City, she gave birth to another daughter, Mary Caroline on May 16, 1841. A couple of months later, on October 29, Charlotte's father, Thomas died. Ten years later, Charlotte died on November 26 in New York City. She was fifty-one. Her youngest daughter was only ten years old.

Two years later, "Black Jake" married her cousin, Charlotte Otis Downes, the woman who had taken care of the young girls at the Springs. One of the most wonderful possessions of Charlotte LeRoy, in the Historical Society's collection, is a manuscript cookbook, dated 1823. Next week, we'll discover what the recipes tell about LeRoy House's first lady.
