LEAR, Charles Henry {I01792} (b. 28 JUL 1844, d. 1938)
Note: This name index was collated in the course of researching the gold rush to Lamplough, near Avoca, in Victoria, Australia, which took place during late 1859 and early 1860.

Lamplough was one of the later gold rushes in 19th century Victorian goldmining history. It attracted thousands of miners. A thriving township sprang up overnight, which included hotels, billiard rooms, schools and churches, and just as quickly when the gold ran out the miners departed Lamplough and moved to the next promising location - nearby Mountain Creek, Kiandra in NSW, and even the fields in New Zealand.

1916 Darcy Connor Lear captain of the First XVIII Football Team, Melbourne High School

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE HISTORY OF UNIVERSITY BLUES FOOTBALL CLUB - FOUNDED 1859

The University of Melbourne opened for business in 1855, just four years after separation from New South Wales and the discovery of rich gold in the young Colony, and only twenty years since Melbourne was nothing but bush. Three years later, in 1858, the famous first game of "Victorian" football was played, and it only took one more year for the game to take hold within the University.

In 1921 Blues joined the MAFA, and thus our League history came to an end. The Blues (and Blacks) were born, and promptly celebrated their arrival by Blacks (captained by Dr. Darcy Lear) playing Blues (Surgeon Rear-Admiral Lionel Lockwood as captain) at the University oval in the 1921 MAFA Grand Final - the first and only time ever. The Blacks won. From 1919 to the early 1990's (except for an 11-year period spanning the 2nd War) the MUFC had a unique dual system of two equal senior teams. It was based on allocation of new players such that the two teams would be brought as near to equal strength as possible. Thus two teams from a single club became strongly competitive rivals but learnt, through much goodwill and commonsense, how to resolve the resulting problems.
