KOCK, Carl Jochum {I03075} (b. 30 DEC 1868, d. 1912)
Note: Murdrered by his jealous wife. A celebrtaed case in København at the time. (MAJ holds a newspaper article on same)

I know , i should have a broadsheet ballad somewhere that was a hit amongst the riffraff of copenhagen 1912-14 dealing with the murder on plumber carl joachim kock, the brother of my grandfather (he was murdered by his wife, anna kock and her lover poul king hansen-vinding while he was sleeping in his bed, holsteinsgade 8, xsterbro... yes, it's a very sad (and very long) song, but you probably want more than that .....per Henrik Kock

KOCK, Emil Lauritz Frederik {I00191} (b. 01 AUG 1828, d. 23 OCT 1913)
Note: Reputedly a lawyer to the royal court of Copenhagen and a governor of the Faeroe Islands (Faeroe's are a self governing dependency of Denmark (like Greenland) with two representatives in the Danish Parliament).

The Kock family is believed to originate from Schleswig-Holstein(per Moya King nee Shields). These two Southern Jutland Peninsula duchies were claimed by Denmark for many years even though the majority of the residents were German speaking. In 1848-50 and 1864, Denmark fought two wars with Germany over Schleswig-Holstein, lost and ceded control to Germany thereafter.

Indexes to Christening records at St. Olai's church in Helsingor, Denmark indicate that at the time of Jacob Peter Cornelius Kock's birth his father was a "probate judge from/for the Faeroe Islands" (Sorenskriver fra Faroerne).

..mif Gnoman fra Faroerne (occupation as on his birth/baptism certificate)

From the book Iceland, Geenland and the Faroe Islands (914.91 Sw24i Cedar Rapids Library)
The Faroes were operated as a government supported trade monopoly operated by the Icelandic Company from 1600 to 1/1/1856 when it was abandoned as a failure. In 1816 the Logting was abolished and replaced by the Danish Judiciary. In 1849 the Faroes were officially declared part of Denmark. In 1852 the Lotging was re-established (this was the local governing body).

The two main islands are Streymoy and Eysturoy. The capital is Torshavn at the southern tip of Streymoy. Next biggest is Klaksvik. Population in 1993 is 47,000 with 15,000 in Torshavn.

From Grollier's:
Faeroe Islands
{fair'-oh}
The Faeroe Islands, located in the North Atlantic about halfway between the Scottish Shetland Islands and Iceland, constitute a self-governing unit within Denmark. With a total land area of only 1,399 km sq (540 mi sq), the archipelago comprises 17 inhabited and 5 uninhabited islands. The population is 47,653 (1989 est.). Thorshavn (1988 est. pop., 14,547), on the island of Streymoy, is the capital. The people speak their own language, Faeroese, which is related to Danish.
The Faeroes are volcanic, rocky, and precipitous, with mountains rising to 882 m (2,894 ft). There is little flat land or natural vegetation. Winters are long and dark, and summer nights are short. Rainfall is heavy, averaging 1,525 mm (60 in) annually, and storms are frequent. Temperatures are mild, however, modified by the warm North Atlantic Drift. The traditional occupations of shepherding, wool working, fowling, and potato growing are still pursued, but large-scale deep-sea fishing and fish processing are now the major economic activities, and tourism is being developed.
The islands were first settled by Irish monks about 700 and by Vikings about 800. They belonged to Norway until 1380, when they were ceded to Denmark. The islands were granted home rule in 1948. The Faeroes have their own legislature and flag. They send two representatives to the Danish parliament

Summary of Emil's life +

Born in Helsingør in 1828 Emil is the eldest son of Peter Cornelius Kock, a schoolteacher and bellringer at his local church. He does not appear with the rest of the family aged 17 in the 1845 census but can be found at nearby Hillerød, Frederiksborg as a student. Is he at university or conscripted for military service? He is also not in Helsingør in the 1855 census, however he marries Metha Schmidt, a native of Copenhagen at Norre Vedby, Maribo in August 1857. Metha gives birth to their son Jacob in Helsingor in May 1858 but Emil is apparently not present. From 1858 to 1866 Emil is in the Faeroe Islands as governor. Here he meets and marries Maren Vangine Djurhuus, a native of the Faeroes. It is assumed that Metha died at or soon after childbirth in Helsingor in 1858. Between 1863 and 1866 Maren gives birth to three daughters, probably in the Færøes. In 1884 his son Jacob registers for emmigration to Melbourne, Australia. The next we hear from Emil is in the 1885 census. He is 56 and living with his wife Maren and his three daughters, on of whom is a teacher in Copenhagen. He is listed as an auction director. At some stage in his life he is also a mayor of a town. In 1905 his wife Maren dies followed by Emil in 1913 aged 85.

Family folk lore has Emil as a judge in the Faeroe Islands which is true but also as an adviser to the Danish Royal Family. This is unproven to date. His ancestors are reputed to have come from Schleswig-Holstien but the only records we have are of his grandfather and father in Frenderup, Damsholte, Monbo in the 1801 census. In the mid 1930s his grand daughter Beryl Kook travelled to Denmark. It is reported that the Kock family wanted nothing to do with her. They even asked someone if "she were black". Emil's son Jacob reportedly sent money back to Denmark regularly. A picture is held, reportedly of Jacob's (half) sister with her husband whose name was thought to be Berthelsen.

KOCK, Jacob Peter Cornelius {I00147} (b. 31 MAY 1858, d. 01 FEB 1935)
Note: Marriage certificate and Lear family bible state date of birth as July 31, 1858 (incorrectly)

Peter's family in Denmark reputedly worked as advisors to the Danish royal family and worked in the palace. Peter, for some unknown reason or indiscretion, was sent by his family, to Australia to live (family folk lore)

The reason may have been that his family were legal advisors and Peter was expected to take up law studies. Instead, he took up photography, alienating himself from the family. Again, family folk lore says that he sent money back to Denmark all his working life. Was he paying for the upkeep of an illegitimate child?

From an early photograph of himself, it appears he worked for, or was proprietor of a photography studio in Copenhagen (probably between 1776-1880):
G.W. Alexandersen (Proprietor's name)
(P.C. Koch's Efterf.) (P.C. Koch's successor)
Fotografisk Atelier (photographic studio)
43 Vesterbrogade (street address)
Kjobenhavn (Copenhagen)
Pladen bevares/opbevares for Efterbestilling (the plate is kept for re-ordering)

Victorian Marriage certificate records (indexes) show spelling of Peter's name as "Kork" - almost certainly a transcription error. His children's birth records all show names as Kock.

South Australian Electoral Rolls, Legislative Council 1909, Southern District, Victoria, Mt. Gambier record #711 shows:
Kock, Jacob Peter C.,Chute St. Mt. Gambier, Photographer, Occupier (ie not owner)

Sands Directories show:
Kook P.C. Photographer, Commercial St. Mt. Gambier, S.A.
for the period 1895 to 1914.

Peter's addresses in Adelaide were:
1916 68 Thomas St. Unley
1920-26 38 Fashoda St.
Hyde Park
1934/5 24 Fashoda St.
Hyde Park

Per Gladys Kook's birth certificate Peter was born in Elsinore, Denmark. Elsinore, known as Helsingor (Parish of Frederiksborg) in Danish, is a Danish seaport on the E. coast of the island of Sjaelland (Zealand), 28 miles north of Copenhagen. Population in 1955=24,000. Opposite town of Halsingborg (3 miles away). Town started in 1425. Castle of Kronborg, built by Frederick II in Dutch renaissance style. This may be the castle with which the family are associated. The castle guarded the entrance to the harbour and was the toll collection point for all ships entering the harbour. It was also the castle made famous in the Shakespear play Hamlet.

More recently, the town has a successful shipyard, a Carmelite monastery, St. Maria Church, old hospital, Marienlyst castle and the ruins of the castle of Eric of Pommern. (Encyclopaedia Brittanica)

From Davies book " The Mechanical Eye: A history of Australian Photography 1840-1900" Davies author. Following details:

Hewitt Photographic Studios
95 Swanston St.
Melbourne, Vic
Operated from 1867 to 1880
(a photograph of Peter's wife Ada & is held by Athalie Jacobs. It has the Hewitt name label on the rear.)
American Gem Studio
Allen & Gove
95 Swanston St.
Melbourne, Vic
Operated from 1881 to 1886

(Since this operated at the same address as Hewitt and Peter had no business of his own until 1888, it is reasonable to assume he probably worked at both these studios between 1885 and 1886)

Kook & Thompson
168 Clarendon St.
South Melbourne, Vic
Operated 1888

Kook & Thompson
202 Clarendon St.
South Melbourne, Vic
Operated from 1889 to 1893 (have a picture of Gladys with this shop name)

David C. Kook
Mt. Gambier, SA
Operated 1893 (most probably a misprint for Peter Kook - see following entry)

Peter C. Kook
Mt. Gambier, SA
Operated 1895 to 1900 (this book does not record history beyond 1900 so Peter was most likely still active until 1914 as indicated from the Sands directories earlier)

Fruhling Studios
62 Rundle St.
Adelaide, SA
Operated from 1896 to after 1923 (this is probably where Peter Kook worked when he went to Adelaide from Mt. Gambier). See notes with Shirley Hanson.

According to the index of church records for St. Olai's Church (Sankt Olai Kirkes) Jacob was christened 5/31/1858. Following up with original church record on microfilm # 0048576 Fodte og Dobte 1849-1861 (births & deaths)

LDS Church has following records:
Parish register to 1915
Census returns
Probate records
Military Levying Roles
Danish Passport Records (Name, occupation,Place of residence, destination, date of issue)
Emigration Records 1868-1910 (Name,Occupation, age, destination, embarked at)

According to Moya King, Jacob was a small person, a gentleman and hard working. He drank excessively. His wife was extremely intelligent, in fact an intellectual snob. She harassed him constantly. Jacob is known to have attempted suicide at least once, being saved by his daughter Gladys on that occasion.

The Church of Sankt Olai Book Jacob's birth registration lists the following witnesses:
(Fru=Mrs.) Schmidt
(Fru=Mrs Gri?) Stangerup
Dr. Claudi ................Petersen
Langrmaud L. Gunnersen
Malmar Schmidt

MOUNT GAMBIER PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB

On Monday 23 February 1903 fifteen amateur and professional
photographers met in Rubenkonig's coffee room at Mount Gambier in
response to advertisements placed in the local papers. The purpose of
the meeting was to consider the formation of a photographic club. The
Australian Photographic Journal reported: 'The idea of starting it
originated with Mr Newling, who was one of the promoters of the first
society in Melbourne, which is now a large and highly prosperous body.
Mr Newling pointed out some of the principal objects of such a club and
the advantages it would confer upon its members, and expressed his
surprise that in a district like this, possessing such beautiful and
varied scenery, and so many amateurs in the art, a photographic club had
not been formed years ago. The gentlemen present appeared to be
enthusiastic in favor of the establishment of a club and . it was
resolved that "The Mount Gambier Photographic Club" should be formed and
all present become members.'

Officers elected were: President, Mr P. Kook; Vice-presidents, C.
Newling and J.I. Underwood; secretary, Mr E.D. Senior; treasurer, Mr G.
Webber. After Mr Kannenberg had taken some flashlight photographs of the
gathering with his 'fine new Watson and Sons Acme camera' the meeting
closed with a coffee supper.
