His father disowned him prior to this public marriage so it is assumed that since no other record of William jr's birth exists, that he was probably the first child born either out of wedlock or in exile.

William and Mary Ann Jacobs (nee Groundsell)

This is a record of William and Mary Ann Jacobs and their descendants and close relatives who emigrated to New Zealand and Australia.

A short outline of the parents of the above;

Henry Jacobs, father of William, died at an early age, so William had to leave school at the age of 9 years, and go out to work to help support his widowed mother and younger brothers and sisters. He eventually took to sea and became a mariner.

William Groundsell, father of Mary Ann, was the official Shoemaker for Queen Victoria, when she was in residence on the Isle of Wight. When Mary Ann was in her teens, she was engaged as a Nursery Governess for King Edward V11 and his sisters at Osborne House, Isle of Wight. Later she went into service in the gentry?s homes in London. Mr William Groundsell died when Mary Ann was a mere child. His widow eventually remarried, to a Mr James Cheverton, and had two sons, William and George.

-----------------------------

William Jacobs and Mary Ann Groundsell were married in the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Newport, Isle of Wight, in the County of Southampton, England on 21st October, 1867. William was then aged 23, Mary Ann was 26. Williams ?rank of Profession? was classed as a ?Woodsman?.

They made their first home in Shalfleet, Isle of Wight, and here their first four children Mary Ann, William Henry, Charley and George Cheverton were born.

When George was three month?s old, William and Mary Ann, with their four children, left England on 6th May 1874 for New Zealand in the sailing ship ?Adamant?.

They had a reasonably good voyage, although the death toll on the ship was thirteen. The parents proved reasonably good travellers - the stamina of their mariner forbears standing to their stead. The daughter Mary Ann had a fever, whilst two of the boys were sick en route. This they put down to the stench of raw hides, which the ?Adamant? had carried on the previous trip, and, due to the need to keep to a sailing schedule, had not had time to be properly cleansed prior to sailing.

Mention must be made of the fact that Mrs Mary Ann Jacobs, being of small build, and very fragile-looking, gave her parents much concern, (they thought she would develop T.B.) when she and her husband made their decision to come to N.Z. They thought her foolhardy to undertake such an ardous journey into the unknown, with four children to care for.

They arrived at the Port of Nelson, N.Z. on 6th August, 1874, just three month since embarking. They immediately set sail for Greymouth on a coastal freighter - the roughest part of the journey since leaving England.

On arrival at Greymouth, they stopped overnight at the Club Hotel on Mawhere Quay, a hotel much frequented by miners. Hotels at the time were for drinking only, and, as there were no bedrooms, William had to rig sheets across a portion of the stage for privacy for his family to sleep.

Next day, they travelled to Kaiata, to the toll house near Mr George Cheverton?s home (George Cheverton, a half-brother of Mary Ann Jacobs, had emigrated previously), on the banks of the Omotumutu Creek, about three miles north of Greymouth. They eventually bought George?s home, and lived there for the next 62 years. Supplies were often difficult to get, boats sometimes arriving at 10 -11 week intervals.

Mr William Jacobs found work wherever possible, mainly as a labourer. Being a handyman, he had had the foresight to bring tools of trade with him, and was much in demand in the early days. For years, he worked on railway construction jobs.

He bought land up the south side of the Omotumutu Creek, inclusive of where the Kaiata school now stands, and the hill opposite. They milked a few cows, also cultivated a good garden, and the produce from these they hawked up the valley, to Brunner, and sold to the miners. Coal barges on the Grey River, going to Brunner, were drawn by horses, walking on tracks cut alongside the river, the Omotumutu Creek being very difficult to ford.

William had bought out a gun (contraband) with him on the ship, so was able to make one pound per day, shooting native pigeons, kakas, and wild duck. In addition to this, catching fish and whitebait (in season) helped to keep the wolf from the door when times were hard. Whitebait was plentiful, and was caught by the kerosine tin in the Omotumutu Creek as the tide was rising. What was not used as food was dug into the garden as fertiliser.

On many occasions, William walked over Arthur?s Pass (a mere track at the time), to Canterbury, to do seasonal work, mainly harvesting, when local jobs were scarce. Meanwhile, Mary Ann and her family would carry on with the farm, milking, and churning the butter. The older boys would deliver the produce to their customers in Brunner.

In latter years, William worked as caretaker at the Greymouth Race Course. With every Fresh in the Grey River, (these were many and often), flood waters would cover the race-course so he had to drive the stock which grazed there to higher ground, often in a row boat, and narrowly avoiding many a mishap doing this.

Mary Ann would often help out collecting toll-charges at the toll gate on the north side of the Kaiata bridge. Many and amusing were the tales she told regarding this.

As the boys grew older, they worked on farms, and eventually bought land themselves.

Tragedy hit the family in 1897. The eldest son William, was accidentally killed by an over-turning dray, on Mr Thomas Craig?s farm at Matai. Another son, James, was drowned. John was killed in action in World War 1, and some years later, Arthur was gored by a bull and killed.
As a family, they were very devoted to each other. A good-living family, they worshipped at the Wesleyan (later Methodist) Church in Greymouth, walking there three miles twice daily each Sunday, wet or fine.

William Jacobs died at the age of 78 years, after being bedridden for nearly two years as the result of a stroke.

Mary Ann Jacobs lived to see her century and three months over. She received numerous congratulatory messages from relatives and friends, also one from the Prime Minister of New Zealand, and a cable from King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth.

The descendants of the great pioneering couple are many, and are scattered throughout N.Z. and overseas.

A brief outline of the children of William and Mary Ann Jacobs.

Education; The children walked to Greymouth to school, which was down near the wharf in those early days. They used to bring home a billy full of brewers? dregs each day from the brewery on Omoto Road, this being used as the rising in the making of bread in their camp ovens, and also as a beverage.

Dear Captain Johnston,

In odd moments I have been pursuing the Hearn Jacobs archives as they appear in my registers.

This is the result (e.+o.e.) so far:-

William Jacobs 1768-1818 [1] married ????????[2]

Had children:

Harriet Hearn = Richard Toomer Apr.1816

William Hearn Jacobs 1797-1871 [1] = Ann Tucker 1794-1861

There might be others. . . . . .

William Hearn Jacobs and Ann Tucker had children:

Harriet 1815 recorded as base born daughter of Ann

Jacob [3]

Fanny Tucker 1816 = Fooke[1]1842

William 1816

James 1818

Henrietta 1820 d. in infancy

Ann 1823 d in infancy

Henry 1824

Leonard 1826

Hugh 1827

Annette + Janette Twins 1829

Frederick 1831

Harriette 1833

Elizabeth 1835

Reverend John Hearn was Rector of Chale from 1612-1648 and is buried beneath the Manor(?) Chapel Altar. I know the American Jacobs claim to be connected with him. How my registers don?t show

This family of Jacobs must have lived in Chale Manor from perhaps 1790 until the death of William Hearn in 1871.

Fanny Tucker is the only member of whom there is any record.

The boys left no trace even in the Banns Book and there is no trace of a marriage of any of the girls. I think the family must have moved out some time before the old man?s death because there isn?t even a burial. I used to know a very old lady, aged over 90, who died in 1951. She did mention the enormous family who occupied two pews in Church but none of the present oldest inhabitants remember them.

The then Rectors never pulled their punches and faithfully recorded births on the wrong side of the blanket. They did not escape baptism whether dexter or sinister. We run to quite a lot in our registers described usually as base born and not confined to any one class.

I think it is possible that Harriet Hearn Jacobs was a minor when she was married as her father gives his permission on the register There was no doubt about the fecundity of Ann Tucker. She was older than William Hearn and probably saw him coming a long way off.

There is one family of Hearns and a much humbler family of Jacobs but none of either name in the Parish now. I don?t think the other Jacob family is of importance to your investigation, Isaac 1832 is probably the precursor of your shopkeeper

Some at least went to the States. I used to know a wealthy descendant who lives in New York. I haven?t his address at the moment but think I could get it. He is a Mr Manning Jacob.

Yours sincerely

C Sinclair

Rector of Chale

You could perhaps try the registers at Arreton or Godshill I.W.

Notes: [1] Described as "Gentleman".

[2] There is a family vault in Chale but the name of the first Mrs Jacob is illegible. It might have been Hearn.

[3] Did Wm Hearn marry her knowing she was carrying someone else?s child? Or did this Harriet die? There is another Harriette differently spelt born 1833 We shall never know now They were married in Newport I.W.

Transcribed by JFJ Johnston (to whom the letter was originally addressed) on 21 Jan 2001. The original is in manuscript. Original spelling and grammar have been maintained, but tabular layout has been changed to accommodate the peculiarities of Microsoft Word 2000
