JACOB, Bartholomew {I00088} (b. 1720, d. 17 FEB 1768)
Note: IOW Marriage Records show:

Bartholomew Jacob m: Martha Barton 1759 @ Arreton IOW Hants

The following is a faithful transcription of two pages, typed (not typeset), numbered 19 and 20 respectively, found in the file FAM/126 (Jacobs) at the Newport, Isle of Wight, England, County Records Office. Notes in this series of files are typically the handwritten copies of research notes of previous JACOB family researchers. Unless otherwise substantiated, these documents should be treated as anecdotal (no reflection on the people who prepared them.)

The numbered references detailed on the page following the transcript are to handwritten notes on these two sheets of paper. The author(s) of these notes is unknown.

At the top of page 19 is a general introduction:

Extract from Leonard Jacob letter circa 1900

-19-

AD 1206 - By a charter dated Sep. 4, 1206, Wm. De Vernon bestowed lands upon the abbey of Quarr among other property lands in Chielle (Chale) and among the distinguished men in the Island who witnessed the grant is "William son of Urry". Pagan Urry witnesses a grant of Walter Matte to Quarr abbey Wm. Urry witnesses a grant of Haseley by de Bohum abbey. Wm. Urry among principle land owners circa (Henry VI) taken from Rolls of parliament at that time. Wm. Urry has Burbridge abt. 1280 - 8th of Ed. I. John Urry is land of Standen temp. Ed. III and held a militia command.

Wm. Urry temp. Ed III raises men for defense of the Island. Robert Urry ab. 1325 temp Ed. II named man Inquisition. In a list of owners of principal Manors from the Conquest up to 1780, the Urrys owned at different times, Afton, Kings Freshwater, Itanden, Shorley and Westover.

*Bartholomew Jacob, my great great grandfather was married to Mary Urry whose ancestors came into the island with the Conqueror and who held lands there from that time and who were allied with nearly all its principal families . Bartholomew and Mary had eight children, 4 sons and 4 daughters. From Isaac, the eldest son, descend the Jacobs of Newchurch. Bartholomew of Pereton (or Whitwell?). the second son, born in 1721 (my great grandfather) married Martha Barton of Blackwater, had issue 4 children, first Robert, (the old gentleman whose picture I leave you) born in 1763; married Mary Sivier, but died without issue - second William, my grandfather born 1764 - then two daughters - Mary, m. Brown of Cridmore (died in childbed) and Jane m. Wm. Hills of Horringford; but my gt. g. father Bartholomew

* Bartholomew was a name born by the early Isle of Nighten - Bartholomew de Insula. B. Leigh and many others (see Worsley & Oglander)

died 1768, leaving all these children under six years of age, and his widow 31 years old. William Jacob his brother, son of Bartholomew and Mary Urry, took charge of the widow and children, he was about 40 years old then - a bachelor and a rich man - he sought the hand of Martha in vain, she died a widow, faithful to the memory of Bartholomew, and has left fame of her beauty, and amiable nature that has endured in the family to the present day - she was only 43 at her death and my grandfather only 16 at that time - but under the guidance of their Uncle William, the children prospered and became rich. My grandfather William Jacob, of Chale, Burbridge, Pereton, etc., etc., married Harriet Hearn* of Heasley who brought him a dower of 3000, and from this marriage three children were born - my father William Hearn Jacob born at Pereton in 1797 - Harriet, and Henrietta. The latter subsequently emigrated with her husband and mother to the United States; her father having died in 1818, leaving an unsatisfactory will which gave contentment to none of the children, or the widow.

* This family came into the Island in time of Ed. VI - Harriet was the 15th child of a family of 16 - her mother being Grace Ioliffe of Heaseley an heiress who m. Wm. Hearn, 4th son of John and great grandson of Wm. Hearn who was probably the first to come to the Island. When an infant at Pereton, W.H.J. my father was carried in the arms of the "dairyman's daughter" - she came in my grandmr's service a little girl as father's special nurse maid - Betsy Walbridge was not at that time the celebrity she afterwards became - in truth grandmr. Said she was a lazy thing.

Its delightful cottages are scattered along the road and grouped about all that is left of its lost priory, the biggest old church in the island, mainly from the 15th century. The porch has for a companion the pillar of a cross 700 years old, with a sundial
on it and on the top of the porch gable is a square head with bared teeth and glaring eyes. We come into the church by a studded door which has kept its wooden lock and an original iron hinge reaching across the top, and we find ourselves in a noble interior with a black oak roof in which are over half a mile of timbers.

The church is remarkable for the tombs in the chancel, which go back to Tudor days. Here sleeps Sir James Worsley, whose family came over with the Conqueror. One of them went crusading and lies buried on the Island of Rhodes, but Sir James stayed at home, brought up at Court as a page to Henry VII, and having as his playfellow the boy who grew up to be Henry VIII. So it was that many honours came his way when his young friend was crowned; he was made Master of the Robes at a time when it fell to him to organise the glittering pageant of the Field of the Cloth of Gold. Sir James is seen here kneeling with his lady under a canopy on which three boys are supporting shields, and above them hangs a medieval tilting helm, no mere funeral helmet, but worn in the tournaments, flaunting in the lists on some victorious head with some proud lady's favour blowing from its crest. It was probably the helmet of the knight himself, and he may have worn it on that glittering field. The pageant he organised was the most brilliant array of nobles the world has ever seen. Nearly 6000 people and over 3000 horses took part in the great cavalcade across the Channel. A palace was built for them 320 feet square, and there were 820 tents set up on the field. Such was the English pageantry alone; and two kings left their palaces to meet in a tent of gold.

By the high altar is what the historian once called the fairest tomb in our island, on which lie Sir John and Dame Agnes Leigh, nobly carved in alabaster by the famous Chellaston craftsmen. Dame Agnes is daintily dressed in a tight-fitting gown and a long cloak with heraldic embroidery, her head resting on a cushion supported by angels. Sir John's head rests on a tilting helmet, and he wears armour, his feet resting on a boar, as do his wife's.

On a wall-monument in the north transept are the busts of two other Worsleys of the 18th century, with figures of Faith and Hope, and there is a big cenotaph which has been locally christened the Bath, set up 130 years ago to Sir Richard Worsley. The ancient font has a cover 200 years old. There is a beautiful Elizabethan chair with strap work and a delicately carved scroll, an 18th century alms dish, a i7th century chest, and the altar rails and altar table are Jacobean. In the chancel are two 17th century stools. A wall-painting which has been here about 500 years has been rescued from many coats of whitewash on the wall of the south transept; it shows Our Lord nailed to a tree with three branches from which spring willow-like leaves, the form of the tree being known as the Budding Cross. The fine cradle roof of the south transept has faces on its wooden bosses, two of the heads wearing gold crowns. The stone corbels of the transept have queer devices, one a dog's head with a padlock in its teeth. On the north wall hangs an oil painting of Daniel with the lions, and in the sanctuary is a small painting of the Madonna by Tiorelli. One of the east windows is lovely with figures of the Madonna and Child, St Michael, and St Gabriel in robes of green, blue, and purple, a nave window has a blue Madonna and a woman looking up appealingly to her in a garden, and another east window has a beautiful Crucifixion scene. There is a processional cross 600 years old, made by an Italian craftsman.

Beneath a broken stone near the porch sleeps a man of the 17th century, Richard Gard, who was apparently not beloved, for he is described as being 'as crafty a knave as any, a penurious base fellow of little religion,' and we are told that he lies only just below the stone, apparently lest he should fail to hear the Resurrection trumpet. Another stone covers the grave of Bartholomew Jacobs, and on it runs this 18th century rhyme:

Man is the seed. God is the sower;
Man is the grass. Death is the mower.

A sundial has been set on the churchyard's 13th century cross, and looking down on it are many green creatures creeping round the battlements.

Appuldurcombe House is the roofless shell of a mansion built in 1710, abandoned in 1909, and damaged by a land mine in 1943. It is now one of the sites in charge of the Ministry of Public Building and Works.
