Note: EDGE, FANE (d.1803), provost-marshal, enlisted in the New South Wales Corps on 6 March 1790 and embarked in April. He was appointed town adjutant by Governor Phillip in February 1792, to draw him 'out of the line of sergeants'. He received no allowance for this position. When appointed by Phillip as provost-marshal of Norfolk Island in March 1792, he took charge of a group of convicts in the Pitt. His wife Sarah accompanied him, and they arrived at Norfolk Island on 23 April 1792. Edge's appointment was not confirmed in London before 1798, and although he drew bills on the expectation of a salary he does not appear to have received one until that year.
When Rev. James Bain left Norfolk Island in March 1794, Edge, at the request of Lieutenant-Governor King, accepted such of the chaplain's duties as he felt authorized to undertake, even attending to the sick during the epidemic of dysentery. He applied to Governor Hunter for an allowance for these clerical duties, and Hunter applied to the secretary of state, but no allowance was recorded. In January 1794 King raised a militia out of the marine settlers and sailors of the wrecked Sirius, and placed Charles Grimes and Edge in command until proper regulations could be arranged in accordance with those of the English militia.
Edge had been given a plot of land to cultivate when he arrived on Norfolk Island, and in 1795 he received a grant of the ground called the Hermitage. Early in 1801 he applied for leave to return to England on private business, asking for a free passage for himself and his family and to be extricated from debt. Governor King refused a free passage, although he was quite agreeable that Edge should resign his post. Apparently he did not depart, for in March 1802 he was suspended by Lieutenant-Governor Foveaux for repeated disgraceful transactions which rendered him unfit for public office. He died soon afterwards, and was buried on Norfolk Island on 22 January 1803. His widow Sarah married Francis Cox in Hobart in 1809.

ELLIS, Elizabeth {I00193} (b. ABT 1822, d. 10 AUG 1907)Note: Most probably is the same Elizabeth Ellis who arrived on the William Money Jan 3 1849 departing Plymouth December 1848. She travelled alone
Hi Michael
I think we can safely scratch the Robert SHIELDS who si buried in Moonta.
According to his headstone he is the one who was born in Mochrum, Scotland
too.
He is buried alone, no wife Elizabeth with him and he died 17 Mar 1897 at
age 62 making his birthdate still 1835 and therefore a bit young for our
Elizabeth. The only other people in the above's plot are a daughter
Catharine who died 3 Oct 1892 at 28 and his mother (no name listed) died 6
Apr 1875 at 63. the monument was erected by another daughter Agnes GRIFFEN.
All of this begs the question - where is your Robert and Elizabeth ELLIS? I
did find
one burial in West Terrace for SHIELD, Elizabeth, bur 11 Aug 1907 at 89 y.o.
her address was listed as Home for Incurables. The birthdates aren't a
perfect
match though - still big question marks. I wonde if they stayed in the hills
area.
I will check the SA directoriesthe next time I am in the State Library
It is very frustrating trying to do research in the Genie Society. They
have some very good material in some respects but not the room for the big
bits. It is completely manned by volunteers as well and most of them don't
know what they are doing
I did confirm that James is buried in Upper Sturt. According to the burial
records he is by himself though. I don't know when these were compiled so it
could be before Emily died. I will sight the grave myself to see. My friend
who lives on the same road as the cemetery will be having dinner with us on
Sat
I tried to ferret out the submitter to the Bio Index but only have a vague
lead which I will follow up before giving up.
That's about all I have to report. Have a safe and pleasant journey if I
don't "talk" to you before you leave.
The weather, at this stage, looks pretty good for Sydney.
Cheers,
